A legacy of connection
The inaugural International Smoke Symposium in Maryland (2013) set a high standard for combining in-person and virtual engagement. Long Beach (2016) further demonstrated the power of virtual connectivity to unite international attendees, and the fully virtual 2020 symposium was a resounding success amid the pandemic.
In 2026 the symposium was held in person at the new Leigh Perkins Conservation Education Center in Tallahassee, Florida — and virtually — bringing together researchers from the atmospheric and ecological sciences, statisticians, computer scientists, forecasters, social and health scientists, technology developers, and smoke responders.
