The 4th International Smoke Symposium (ISS4)

ISS4 was held at the Leigh Perkins Conservation Education Center in Tallahassee, Florida, March 23–27, 2026. It brought together researchers from the atmospheric sciences, the ecological sciences, health sciences, mathematicians, computer sciences, climatologists, social scientists, and others to discuss the complex issues of smoke and identify knowledge gaps and opportunities for innovation and development.

2025 — Safety Summit & Human Dimensions, Calgary

The IAWF hosted the 18th International Wildland Fire Safety Summit and the 7th Human Dimensions of Wildland Fire Conference in Calgary, Alberta, Canada, October 20–23, 2025 — a fantastic opportunity for professionals to gather, share insights, and discuss advancements in fire safety and the human dimensions of wildland fire management. 2024 — UK Wildfire Conference · WFCC · Cohesive Strategy Workshop · Fire Behavior and Fuels

IAWF partnered with the UK Wildfire Conference (“Resilience in a Changing World”); the biennial Wildland Fire Canada Conference; the 7th Annual National Cohesive Wildland Fire Management Strategy Workshop in Atlantic City, New Jersey (September 16–19, 2024); and the 7th International Fire Behavior and Fuels Conference, held in three venues across three countries.

2023 — 8th International Wildland Fire Conference, Porto

IAWF was proud to be an Institutional Partner for the 8th International Wildland Fire Conference at the Alfândega do Porto Congress Center, Porto, Portugal (May 16–19, 2023), furthering the mission of responding to severe and widespread forest fire seasons worldwide.

2022 — Fire and Climate · UK Wildfire Conference · WFCC · Forest Fire Research

The IAWF Fire and Climate Conference ran May 23–27 in Pasadena, California and June 6–10 in Melbourne, Australia. The UK Wildfire Conference 2022 in Belfast focused on “Wildfires — The Human Dimension”. The biennial Wildland Fire Canada Conference and the International Conference on Forest Fire Research rounded out the year.

2020–2021 — Virtual summits and workshops

Across four days in May 2021, the IAWF 16th Wildland Fire Safety Summit and 6th Human Dimensions Conference connected a truly international audience online. The 4th Cohesive Strategy Workshop ran virtually in October 2021, following the 2020 “Dynamic Adaptation in a Novel World” session, and the 3rd International Smoke Symposium was held as a virtual conference.

2017–2019 — Safety Summits, Fire Continuum, and workshops

Highlights include Wildfire 2019, the 7th International Wildland Fire Conference in Brazil; the 15th Safety Summit and 5th Human Dimensions Conference in Asheville, North Carolina (December 2018); the Fire Continuum Conference with the Association for Fire Ecology; and the Cohesive Strategy Workshop “All Hands, All Lands” in Reno, Nevada (April 2017).
